Today's adventure takes us on a detour from the Appalachian Trail, a necessary deviation due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The storm's impact is evident as we navigate the 20.9-mile reroute, a temporary path that will reconnect us with the original trail further down the line. It's an unexpected bonus, like a free two-mile hike!
The detour consists of three trails: Flat Top, Iron Mountain, and Mount Rogers. What's intriguing is that Iron Mountain was once a part of the AT itself, until 1972. Hiking these multi-use trails offers a unique experience; today, I encountered a couple riding horses, a delightful change from the usual trail companions.
As we ventured into Virginia, the terrain became more forgiving, with gentler elevation changes. It's a welcome relief, and I'm embracing the easier hiking. However, Mother Nature had other plans, as the rain poured just as we neared our campsite. Opting for the shelter tonight, I can dry my clothes and avoid a soggy tent.
The evening brought an unexpected playmate - a Border Collie named Sticks, whose energy levels remain high even after a day's hike. Her trail name is a nod to her passion for picking up sticks. As I settled into my sleeping bag, her sad puppy eyes reminded me of the chilly temperatures, a surprise for mid-May. I'm grateful for my cold-weather gear, a decision I made despite well-meaning advice to send it home.
This detour is a reminder of the unexpected twists and turns that hiking can bring. It's an adventure, and I'm embracing the surprises along the way.
As we continue on this journey, I'm excited to see what other detours and encounters await us. It's a constant reminder that hiking is not just about the destination, but the unique experiences and connections we make along the way.
